A Family Business with Deep Roots
The Griffin location of Morgan’s Market has been open for two seasons, but the business behind it goes back much further. The parent operation has been running in Newnan for more than three decades, and that’s where the real magic happens behind the scenes. All the annuals sold at Morgan’s Market are grown in house at the Newnan greenhouses, hand planted and hand grown from the start. Nothing is trucked in from a distributor and dropped on a shelf. Every plant has a story before it ever reaches the sales floor.
At the Griffin location, Manager Mikhail Noles and employee Brittany Bell run the show.
The Rhythm of a Plant Shop
Morgan’s Market is closed on Sundays and Mondays, but that doesn’t mean the plants get a day off too. Staff still come in on those closed days just to water, because plants need care every single day whether the doors are open or not. In fact, this interview happened on a closed Monday, and customers were already pulling into the parking lot out of habit. Given how steady that morning traffic has been, the owner is considering opening on Mondays going forward.
The care routine itself is simple but consistent: water daily, fertilize once a week, and always keep music playing. As Brittany puts it – “the plants survive off it”. Their favorite to play while working is “Ring My Bell.”
More Than a Storefront
What stands out most about Morgan’s Market is how much community is woven into the business. The employees do know about plants, too! They can talk about different varietals, soil and sun conditions, and are well-versed in their assortment. There are also ties to the UGA extension office for answering customer plant questions their experts may not know, and a genuine interest in connecting with local garden clubs, including retiree groups from Sun City and tour groups that come through the Newnan greenhouses. One mom recently brought her toddlers by just so they could learn about volunteering by watering the plants themselves.
Even the layout of the shop is intentional. The color arrangement near the gate is placed specifically to catch the eye of passersby and pull them in off the road. Bees and other pollinators are part of the charm too. Certain plants have sold out simply because customers noticed all the bee activity around them and wanted in on it.
